Updated Order of the Provincial Health Officer - Gatherings & Events

The August 5 order repeals and replaces the previous order, issued on July 27. The key items that have been clarified in the updated order are summarized below:

  • If there is a live music performance, a presenter or presider of events, an appropriate physical barrier must be installed between the performer, presenter or presider and the patrons. Alternatively, there must be at least a three metre separation between the performer, presenter or presider and the patrons. (Previously, a barrier and a three metre separation were required).

  • The gatherings and events order applies to meetings or conferences held in hotels or anywhere else and the definition of an “event” has been expanded to include exhibitions and fairs.

  • The definition of an “organizer” has been expanded to include a person who acts as host at an event, which could include a wedding planner or an individual who is hired to organize and manage an event.

  • The 50 person limit is not intended to include staff.

Amendments to PHO Order regarding Vacation Rentals

The Provincial Health Officer’s order on gatherings and events was also amended to limit the number of people in vacation rentals, including houses, condos, cabins, yurts, houseboats and hotel suites.

The number of people is limited to the capacity of the space, plus a maximum of five visitors. For example, if the capacity of the accommodation is four people, the maximum number of visitors allowed is five for a total of no more than nine people. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure the order is adhered to by all guests and to ensure contact tracing information is collected for everyone – guests and visitors alike.

Please review the PHO order to understand the conditions that must be met.
