The Biosphere Commitment Program allows tourism industry stakeholders within the Thompson Okanagan to be recognized and involved through the Biosphere Certification. Most importantly, organizations are taking extra steps to participate in the value-added programs to working towards the Sustainable Development Goals. The tourism organizations in the Thompson Okanagan region who are committed to the Biosphere Commitment Program are working together to make the region more sustainable and resilient.
An initiative of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, the Biosphere Hall of Fame was created to recognize and celebrate the organizations that make the region a more sustainable destination.
Award Categories
Sustainable Project of the Year Award
The Sustainable Project of the Year Award was created to recognize organizations that develop and implement sustainability projects that go above and beyond while inspiring others to take action. This award was established in 2020 by the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association and is bestowed upon a committed Biosphere company in the Thompson Okanagan region.
Pioneer Award
The global pandemic and travel restrictions in 2020 largely affected the way we think about travel, tourism and sustainable development. 2021 is an opportunity to rethink how we travel, be innovative in tourism management, build sustainable tourism models and create the right partnerships.
As a new award developed in 2021, the Pioneer Award honors fresh ideas and new solutions to sustainable tourism development that improve the Thompson Okanagan region as a whole.
Eco Efficiency Excellence Award
The Eco Efficiency Excellence Award, in partnership with GreenStep Solutions, recognizes organizations that have demonstrated excellence in managing environmental impacts, particularly in energy efficiency and sustainable management of waste and water. This award was established in 2020 by the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association and is bestowed upon tourism businesses in the Thompson Okanagan region. The winner demonstrates outstanding participation and implementation of the Eco Efficiency Program and Energy Assessments.
